The best reason for being physically active is that it helps to maintain an individual’s independence and ability to do the same things through life. It can also be fun, and a way of reducing the stresses and strains of everyday life. Whatever active & physical activities are chosen, including those for people in wheelchairs or with limited mobility or cognition, and whether they are in a group or individual, indoors or out, there is likely to be a psychological benefit and an increased sense of emotional wellbeing.
Physical activity programs for the frail elderly must consider isolation, depression and loneliness factors. Some elderly people feel much fear about losing their independence. Programs must boost self-esteem and promote the feeling of self-reliance.
